TEAM GB are creating some heat over in Sochi that was most certainly unexpected. Most all of the UK Team first learnt their craft under the awnings of an artificial snow slope or a Dendex dry slope, so to have two GB riders up in the finals at yesterdays Men's slopestyle was outstanding!
Jamie Nicholls and Billy Morgan both smashed it in the finals yesterday to make 6th and 10th place, respectively. Although not reaching the podium on the first Olympic event of these games, these two underdogs had the time of their lives yesterday. Most of the athletes, hugging, laughing and high fiving eachother all the way through the qualifiers, semis and finals. All of them stoked to be part of something so huge and historical - congratulating and supporting each other in a way so indicative of snowboarding culture.
Similarly, the GB ladies have come out of left field to bring hope to female snowboarders everywhere! Jenny Jones bringing home the goods to win BRONZE and go down in history as the first medal for Team GB for Sochi 2014, she was described as having a face that could rise bread!
Aimee Fuller narrowly missing out on a place in the finals but switched up to the commentary box to dominate the BBC's coverage of the final event. SO entertaining! Known for her double backflip signature move, she just failed to land it cleanly but manages to gather up all that energy to root for her team and fellow girl riders!
All in all, this historical coverage of snowboarding by 'the establishment' has brought worldwide recognition to a sport that encompasses passion, energy, hardwork, athleticism and friendship on a scale not seen in any other discipline! Finally, people everywhere are starting to 'get' what snowboarding is all about! Congratulations TEAM GB!!!
