I've relocated to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, France for Winter 2013/14. Affectionally known as 'Bourg', this quaint market town is at the base of the Paradiski area in the heart of the French Alps. The Paradiski area covers Les Arcs, La Plagne and Peisey-Vallandry- all stellar mountain resorts. My season pass this time around covers this entire area and I doubt I'll manage to explore it all, it's such vast terrain.
This season's weather so far has seen a solid base built up pre-Christmas, followed by a longer than average period of boiling hot bluebird days- uncharacteristic for this time of year. Subsequently this has led the the unfortunate cancellation of the Red Bull Linecatcher 2014 - A Freeskiing contest held at Les Arcs. The Freeskiing committee met following the exceptionally high temperatures in the Alps to discuss the progress of the competition and made the decision to cancel based on the weather forecast for the duration of the event. The Committee believe that 'the security for the twenty-two athletes involved in the competition were not insured' and that the current snowpack was unstable for this type of event. The event was due to run from January 11-18th and it was just not viable for competition this time around.
Here's last year's edit from Red Bull Linecatcher 2013 and a little peak at what Les Arcs looks like.
It's unfortunate and disappointing but a wise choice in the face of the current conditions. Snow sports events are based around the weather and snowfall is not a predictable science in which anyone can be sure. We are hoping for snow....constantly....all the time, but it's more important we stay safe on the slopes y'all. It would be nice to have some fresh to play on but for now, just being in this beautiful part of the world, in the sunshine, and snowboarding all day, every day is pretty OK with me!
